Long COVID Survivors Still Fighting for Answers 5 Years On

Living with long COVID is like fighting an invisible enemy that has redefined every aspect of my existence. It’s been five years since I first came down with symptoms, and I’m still trying to survive in a world that doesn’t yet know how to heal us.

Long COVID is defined as a chronic condition occurring after SARS-CoV-2 infection, present for at least 3 months. Globally, it affects an estimated 400 million people, causing an annual economic impact of $1 trillion. In the US, over 29% of adults with prior COVID-19 infections have experienced long COVID.

I was diagnosed with post-viral syndrome in 2020, and it wasn’t until 2021 that my doctor officially diagnosed me with long COVID. The past five years have been a battle against exhaustion and pain, with doctors struggling to pinpoint the cause of my lingering illness.

Researchers are stumped as to the true cause, but they have several theories, including autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, viral persistence, and microclots in the blood. I’ve tried various treatments, from dysautonomia to chronic pain management, to regain a semblance of normalcy.

Long COVID clinics offered me comprehensive diagnostic workups and training on coping with this unpredictable condition. Research studies have been invaluable, making me feel seen and giving hope that some good may come to others.

I’ve also learned the importance of pacing myself and setting boundaries to protect my energy. I’ve found solace in embracing “dolce far niente” – the sweetness of doing nothing – and incorporating light exercise into my routine. Community support has been a lifeline, with online forums and social media connections reminding me that I’m not alone.

As I stand at this proverbial crossroads, I feel cautious optimism for the future. Research is ongoing, advocacy continues, and patients like me are pushing for recognition, treatment, and support. We need more clinical trials, more doctors specializing in post-viral conditions, and greater understanding from society as a whole.

We’re not lazy or making this up; we’re simply trying to survive in a world that doesn’t yet know how to heal us.
