Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers has expressed willingness to play designated hitter this season, signaling a possible switch from his traditional position. In a recent statement, Devers told reporters he’s “good to do whatever” the team wants him to do, indicating a shift in his stance on the matter. The 2020 All-Star had previously expressed reluctance to move from third base, but now appears open to serving as the team’s primary DH.
Devers has been dealing with shoulder soreness and has yet to participate in an official spring training game for Boston. However, he did play in an intrasquad game last Thursday, hitting a home run against new starter Walker Buehler. When asked about his readiness for Opening Day against the Rangers on March 27, Devers expressed confidence: “I expect to be there.” The team’s manager and chief baseball officer have already discussed Devers’ role with him, and he assures that their conversations remain private.
