Scottie Scheffler is trailing by six shots behind co-leaders Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia, but the 2024 champion remains optimistic about his chances of capturing a historic three-peat at THE PLAYERS Championship. After two rounds, Scheffler is tied for 15th place at 5-under-par.
Scheffler’s struggles on Friday were evident in his frustration with missed putts and a few errant shots. Despite this, he still managed to birdie several holes, including the par-5 11th and short par-4 12th. His approach play has been a strength for him this week, gaining nearly six strokes on the field.
The 2025 season has started on a similar note to last year’s, with Scheffler flirting with contention but ultimately falling short due to inconsistencies in his game. However, he drew inspiration from his performance last year, when he trailed by six shots after two rounds and went on to win the championship.
With favorable weather conditions expected for Saturday, Scheffler is looking forward to a better day and an opportunity to climb the leaderboard. He believes that as long as he can make a few putts drop, he can navigate the challenging layout of TPC Sawgrass. “Still doing a lot of good things,” Scheffler said, “hitting a lot of good putts and looking forward to trying to climb the leaderboard over the weekend.”
