US and Israel Explore Gaza Resettlement Options in Africa

US and Israeli officials have approached Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland about resettling displaced Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The proposal was first made by President Donald Trump in February, who suggested relocating over 2 million Palestinians to other countries. However, his plan was met with widespread criticism across the Arab world and Europe.

Since then, US and Israeli officials have been in contact with the three African nations to explore the possibility of resettling Gazans there. Sudan has declined such offers, while sources in Somalia and Somaliland say they are unaware of any discussions.

Sudan’s relationship with Israel is complex, having signed the 2020 Abraham Accords to normalize ties with the country. However, the nation is currently embroiled in a civil war, with over 30 million people living in humanitarian crisis conditions.

Somalia and Somaliland have different dynamics, with Somalia being one of Washington’s largest arms suppliers and an estimated 18 million population spread across 640,000 square kilometers. Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region, presents a unique case as it is not internationally recognized but has drawn Israeli interest over the years.

The proposal remains unclear, with US officials stating that discussions have only just begun. Israel is leading the talks, but it remains to be seen whether any agreements will be reached.
