MacBook Air Dilemma: Old Faithful or New Model?

As I consider upgrading my trusty M1 MacBook Air, I’m torn between a few factors that might tip the scales in favor of buying a shiny new M4 model. The original reason for buying an M1 Mac was to get a more portable device after using a 17-inch MacBook Pro and an 11-inch MacBook Air for years. The iPad became my primary portable workstation, but it’s now relegated to emergencies only.

The latest-gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard revived my interest in laptops, making the M1 MacBook Air redundant as a daily user. However, I have an M1 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro that’s more convenient for coffee-shop use. When I lent my old MBA to a friend, it refused to boot, and repairs were too expensive.

I ended up buying a refurbed M1 with 16GB RAM at half the price of the new M4 model. While longevity was an argument against buying a new Mac, the resale market for MacBook Airs is peculiar, with many buyers willing to pay Apple Silicon prices for Intel machines based on cosmetic condition and photos.

The main issue now is that my refurbed M1 MacBook Air is too good! It’s performing well, staying cool during heavy use, and even running Final Cut Pro smoothly. I’ve been using it in coffee shops without carrying the iPad and keyboard combo, making me wonder if this might become a more active machine than I initially thought.

I’d need significant benefits to justify spending twice as much on an M4 model, which mostly includes features like a better camera, MagSafe, and fast charging. However, I do appreciate the latest version of macOS when used regularly. Ultimately, I haven’t made up my mind, but I’m leaving the decision open for now.

Will I choose to upgrade or stick with my trusty M1 MacBook Air? Only time will tell.
