Measles Cases Soar in US, Exceeding 2019 Numbers

The US has reported over 300 measles cases just three months into 2025, surpassing yearly case counts since 2019. The majority of these cases are linked to an outbreak in an undervaccinated county in West Texas that spread to New Mexico and Oklahoma. As of March 14, Texas reported 259 cases with 34 hospitalizations and one death, while New Mexico reported 35 cases with two hospitalizations and one death.

Measles is considered eliminated if there’s no continuous spread in the country for at least 12 months. However, this year has seen three outbreaks, with cases also reported in Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 301 cases as of March 13, excluding new cases reported today in Texas and two in New Mexico.
