Donatella Versace Stepping Down, New Designer Hired

Donatella Versace, the iconic Italian luxury brand’s creative force for nearly three decades, is leaving her post as chief creative officer after almost 30 years. The decision marks a new era for Versace, which owns Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo, and comes amidst speculation about its sale.

Versace’s new designer is Dario Vitale, the former design and image director of Miu Miu, who has been named to the role. Capri Holdings CEO John D. Idol called the move “part of a thoughtful succession plan.” Donatella Versace, 69, will become chief brand ambassador, focusing on philanthropy and red-carpet appearances.

Donatella Versace took over as designer after her brother Gianni’s murder in 1997 and has since become synonymous with the brand. Despite lacking formal fashion training, she built a reputation for her innovative aesthetic. The brand’s success has been a subject of interest, with Capri considering selling Versace following the Federal Trade Commission blocking an attempted merger with Tapestry.

Dario Vitale, who worked at Miu Miu under Miuccia Prada, is seen as a qualified candidate to continue Versace’s legacy. The new designer called the role “a privilege” and thanked Donatella Versace for her trust in him. As speculation about Versace’s sale continues, Donatella Versace has expressed her commitment to supporting the brand, saying it will always be “in my DNA and heart.”
