Google has announced that it’s officially retiring its Google Assistant service. The company will be upgrading more users from Google Assistant to Gemini over the coming months. Classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads later this year.
However, older Android phones and those without sufficient RAM (2GB+) will still be able to use the classic Assistant. Tablets, cars, headphones, watches, speakers, displays, and TVs will also get an upgrade to Gemini. The company plans to share more details in the coming months, potentially revealing a new experience at Google I/O in May.
Google launched its initial Google Assistant in 2016. With Gemini now taking on a broader role for many of Google’s AI efforts, it’s not surprising that the company is retiring the Google Assistant brand.
