US, Israel Offer Palestinians Refugee Status in East Africa

US and Israeli officials have reportedly discussed with three East African governments – Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland – the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza to these countries. According to a report by The Associated Press, officials from the US and Israel confirmed contacts with Somalia and Somaliland, while also mentioning Sudan as a potential destination.

The proposal, which was first floated by US President Donald Trump in January, has been widely rejected by Palestinians and many Middle Eastern countries as ethnic cleansing. However, some officials have expressed concerns about the plan’s feasibility and the potential implications for the affected populations.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has stated that Israel is working to identify countries willing to accept Palestinian refugees. Meanwhile, an associate professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies has warned that the forced displacement of Palestinians would be a “red line” and called on governments worldwide to reject such proposals.

In exchange for accepting resettled Palestinians, East African governments may receive financial, diplomatic, and security incentives. However, some experts have questioned the motivations behind these overtures, suggesting possible hidden agendas.
