US Responds to China’s Export Ban on Key Minerals

The US has warned that China’s export ban on key minerals such as germanium and gallium is a “necessary step” to mitigate the impact and deter further coercive actions from Beijing.

In response to the new controls, the US State Department stated that it will take necessary steps to diversify away from China and strengthen efforts with other countries. The move comes after China’s commerce ministry cited national-security concerns as the reason for the ban.

The US has also blacklisted around 140 Chinese entities, accusing them of acting on behalf of Beijing. This latest move is seen as a response to China’s increasing restrictions on access to advanced technologies.

China’s export ban underscores the need for the global community to de-risk and diversify critical supply chains away from the PRC (People’s Republic of China).
