Tesla’s overall favorability has hit a nine-year low, according to a recent survey by YouGov. The US public’s impression of the electric vehicle giant has dropped to -12.7, with liberals scoring the lowest at -34.9 and moderates at -9.1. However, Tesla’s favorability among conservative Americans has risen significantly, reaching 7.6.
The decline in Tesla’s favorability is partly attributed to Elon Musk’s growing involvement in politics, which has sparked protests and boycott efforts across the US. Anti-Musk protests have taken place in several cities, while vandalism incidents targeting Tesla vehicles have led to police arrests.
Despite this, buying consideration for Tesla – or the likelihood of a consumer purchasing a Tesla vehicle – remains relatively stable across US political groups. On Wednesday, 8.1% of liberals, 9% of moderates, and 8.4% of conservatives in the US said they would consider buying a Tesla, compared to an average of 10% for all automakers.
Tesla’s sales have also declined in recent months, with deliveries down over 70% in Australia and Germany, and 40% in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. In the US, sales declined 11% in January, though the company still maintains its leading market share.
