Cuba’s National Grid Collapses Amid Widespread Blackouts

Cuba’s national electrical grid collapsed late on Friday, leaving millions without power across the country. The failure occurred at an electrical substation in Havana, causing a widespread blackout that affects nearly the entire city and much of western Cuba.

The energy ministry reported a deficit of 42% in the national energy system, with peak-hour demand reaching around 3,250 megawatts. Internet service was also affected, with reports of outages coming from provinces east and west of Havana.

This latest grid failure is part of a long-standing issue plagued by fuel shortages, natural disasters, and an economic crisis. Hours-long rolling blackouts have been the norm for months, exacerbating severe shortages of food, medicine, and water that have made life increasingly difficult for many Cubans.

The collapse comes as authorities struggle to implement programs aimed at addressing these issues, including the installation of photovoltaic parks. While promises are being made to install dozens of such parks this year, concerns remain about the reliability of Cuba’s power generation system.
