US Considers Broadest Travel Ban Yet, Targeting 43 Countries

The Trump administration is considering a new travel ban that would target the citizens of up to 43 countries. A draft list, developed by diplomatic and security officials, includes 11 “red” countries with flat bans on entry from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.

Citizens of another 10 “orange” countries would face restricted travel, with mandatory in-person interviews required for visas. The draft list also includes 22 “yellow” countries that would need to address perceived deficiencies within 60 days or risk being added to the other lists.

The proposal is broader than previous bans and targets more countries, particularly those with weak governments and economies. However, some countries on the list share characteristics with earlier bans, such as being Muslim-majority or having poor governance.

The move is seen as an attempt to tighten national security measures, following President Trump’s executive order in January 2021, which aimed to protect American citizens from alleged threats. The plan comes amid ongoing debates over immigration and national security policy.
