St. Louis County health officials say they are nearing the end of their investigation into an E. coli outbreak linked to Rockwood school events and Andre’s Banquets and Catering. The outbreak, which has affected 115 people, includes 13 hospitalizations, with two patients still in the hospital.
Genetic testing confirmed a significant link between 25 cases at Andre’s Banquet, representing the largest identified subcluster in the outbreak. The investigation found that exposure to leafy greens was a common factor across all six states where cases were reported: Kansas, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, and Indiana.
Health officials say that while exposure to lettuce was a contributing factor nationwide, the rates of illness from St. Louis County events are higher than in other areas. The outbreak is believed to have originated from the farm or processing facility before reaching Andre’s Banquet.
The investigation began on November 13 when three cases were reported connected to Rockwood Summit High School. Ed Rhode, a spokesman for Andre’s, stated that it was unfair to name the company before the lettuce testing was complete and expressed hope that St. Louis County would find the source of the local outbreak soon.
