Residents in Castaic and Val Verde have expressed their frustration with the ongoing pollution problems at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, which has turned their “dream homes” into nightmarish experiences. A news conference was held on Friday at the Castaic Community AME Church, where residents shared their struggles with health issues caused by the landfill.
The landfill’s pollution has led to chronic symptoms such as headaches, sore throats, and burning eyes, as well as nosebleeds in some cases. Dr. Jasmeet Bains, a family and addiction specialist, rushed to help a 13-year-old boy experiencing a nosebleed during the conference.
Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo called the news conference to raise awareness about the issue and push for more resources to be allocated to address the problems residents are facing. She stated that she had spoken with county supervisors and received support for declaring a state of emergency, citing the lack of progress in resolving the situation through local, state, and federal efforts.
Schiavo’s office later clarified that Supervisor Kathryn Barger was not invited to the news conference, but remains vigilant about the landfill’s impact on the community. The assemblywoman also proposed solutions such as moratoriums on property taxes and mortgage relief for affected residents.
The event brought together a group of legislators who shared their reactions to the situation and expressed support for Schiavo’s efforts. As the crisis continues to unfold, residents are calling for urgent action to address the environmental and health concerns caused by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill.
