Knoxville, Tenn. – No. 7 Florida dropped game two at No. 2 Tennessee by a score of 10-0 in seven innings on Saturday evening. Despite the loss, UF freshman starter Aidan King had a tremendous outing in his SEC debut.
King pitched six innings of one-run ball, striking out six batters and allowing four hits and one walk. The rookie from Jacksonville, Fla., has now tossed back-to-back quality starts for the Orange & Blue. His ERA stands at 0.95 on the season.
The Volunteers (19-0, 2-0 SEC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Manny Marin. Tennessee went on to score nine runs in the seventh inning, capped off by a three-run homer from Reese Chapman.
King was replaced after seven innings, and Tennessee starting pitcher Marcus Phillips earned the victory behind seven shutout frames. The Gators (16-4, 0-2 SEC) have struggled at the plate, going scoreless through seven innings.
Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan praised King’s performance, calling him “outstanding” for his first road start in the league. However, he lamented the loss, saying it was “unfortunate the game got away from us.” The Gators face off against Tennessee again on Sunday at 1 p.m. on SEC Network+.
