SteamOS, already available on the Steam Deck gaming handheld, is rumored to soon be released as a desktop operating system. According to a post on X by user @SadlyItsBradley, who claims that “Valve pushed a ton of commits to prepare for SteamOS general public release,” the system is almost ready.
This would allow PC gamers to switch away from Windows and its associated bloatware, potentially disrupting Microsoft’s OS dominance. A non-Windows operating system on desktop gaming PCs or laptops could be particularly appealing, as it would give users more control over their hardware and software.
A SteamOS release for desktops and laptops could also benefit Valve by attracting tens of millions of gamers who currently use Windows-based systems. Gaming handhelds like the ASUS ROG Ally may even switch to SteamOS from Windows, giving Valve a significant advantage in the market.
While details are scarce, @SadlyItsBradley’s post suggests that SteamOS is indeed in the works and could become a major player in the gaming world.
