Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX’s Starship will embark on a mission to Mars at the end of 2026, carrying Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus. The tech billionaire aims to have humans set foot on the red planet by 2029, although he predicts 2031 as the more likely date.
The Starship is described as the world’s most powerful launch vehicle, capable of carrying up to 165 tons fully reusable and 275 tons expendable. Musk has long expressed his enthusiasm for establishing a human presence in space, with his “Occupy Mars” shirt spotted at the White House recently.
This announcement comes during an exciting week for SpaceX, following the successful launch of a crew headed for the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS mission aims to replace astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stuck in space for nine months.
