Miami Beach Mayor Urges Theater to Cancel Pro-Palestinian Oscar Winner

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner has urged an independent film cinema in the city to cancel screenings of a documentary about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that he calls “hateful propaganda.” The film, titled “No Other Land,” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and has been widely criticized in Israel and by Jewish groups.

Meiner’s letter, sent on March 5, asks the CEO of O Cinema, Vivian Marthell, to remove the film from its schedule. He argues that the city’s policy supports the State of Israel and that showing the film would be “disappointing” for residents.

However, Marthell has confirmed that the documentary will still premiere tonight and run for several days. She cited the importance of free speech and the need to showcase diverse perspectives.

The documentary, which explores the demolition of Palestinian villages in the West Bank, has sparked controversy due to its portrayal of Israeli actions. The film’s directors have condemned violence against Palestinians and called for action to stop injustice.

O Cinema has stated that it will not cancel the screenings, despite pressure from Meiner. Instead, the theater will provide a statement explaining its decision to screen the film.
