Ukraine Fends Off Russian Attack in Kursk Region, Warns of Potential Sumy Attack

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Ukrainian troops are still fighting Russian forces in the Kursk region but not surrounded. Russia has regained control over two villages near Sudzha and evacuated over 300 residents from the area.

Zelenskiy warned of a potential attack on Ukraine’s northeast Sumy region, saying Moscow is accumulating forces nearby for a separate strike. Ukrainian military analysts say Russia is close to ejecting Ukrainian forces from their foothold in Kursk, seized in August last year.

The situation near the strategic city of Pokrovsk has stabilized, with Ukraine successfully using a new domestically-produced long-range missile in combat. The long Neptune missile has a range of 1,000 kilometers and Kyiv is seeking to expand its domestic defense industry.

Russia’s forces have launched airstrikes, shelled Ukrainian positions, and clashed with Ukrainian troops over 150 times in the Kursk region. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said European nations and Western allies are boosting preparations to support Ukraine in the event of a peace deal with Russia.
