Ovechkin Moves Within 8 Goals of Breaking Gretzky’s Record

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th career goal on Saturday against the San Jose Sharks, moving within eight goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.

Ovechkin had a rough start to his California trip, but broke his goal drought with a late score against the Sharks in a 5-1 victory. The goal came after three power plays and showed that Ovechkin is still capable of producing on the ice.

After scoring, Ovechkin received cheers from the crowd, who were eager to see him break Gretzky’s record. Romanov is the NHL-record 182nd goalie Ovechkin has scored on out of his 217 faced career.

With 15 games remaining to break the record this season, Ovechkin now sees a chance to finally surpass Gretzky’s mark of 894 goals.
