Boost Heart Health with Short Daily Bursts of Exercise

Thousands of people reported doing no regular exercise, but experts say that small bursts of physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure in women. Researchers found that brief periods of exertion, such as climbing stairs or carrying heavy shopping bags, can lower heart health risks by up to 45%.

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, analyzed data from over 81,000 middle-aged people who wore activity trackers for seven days. The results showed that women who recorded a daily average of 3.4 minutes of intense activity were 45% less likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure compared to those who didn’t manage any activity.

Specifically, the risk of a heart attack was reduced by 51%, and the risk of developing heart failure was reduced by 67%. Men who managed similar short periods of activity also saw significant reductions in their heart health risks. The findings suggest that “vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity” could be a promising target for preventing cardiovascular disease, particularly among women who struggle to exercise regularly.
