Scientists “Freeze” Light, Unlocking Supersolid State

Italian scientists have successfully “frozen” light, discovering a rare state of matter known as supersolidity. The breakthrough, published in ‘Nature’, demonstrates that light can exhibit both solid-like structure and frictionless flow, paving the way for advancements in quantum computing and optical technologies.

Researchers led by Antonio Gianfate used quantum techniques to create a supersolid state in light. They created hybrid light-matter particles called polaritons, which formed satellite condensates with opposite wavenumbers, confirming the presence of a supersolid state.

This discovery has significant implications for quantum technology, including the development of more stable qubits and optical devices. Scientists anticipate that future research will refine these techniques, enabling controlled formations of supersolid light.
