Dollar General Announces Store Closures Amid Slight Financial Growth

Dollar General plans to close 96 stores and 45 Popshelf locations in the first quarter of 2025, despite a 5% increase in net sales for fiscal year 2024. The company’s CEO, Todd Vasos, stated that the closures will help position the retailer better to serve its customers and communities.

The store closings are part of an evaluation of Dollar General’s store portfolio, aimed at determining current and future performance as well as operating conditions. Although the closures represent less than 1% of the overall store base, Vasos believes they are necessary for the company’s long-term success.

In fiscal year 2024, net sales increased to $40.6 billion, a 5.0% increase from $38.7 billion in the previous fiscal year. Same-store sales also rose by 1.4%, with customer traffic and average transaction amount increasing by 1.1% and 0.3%, respectively.

However, the company’s net income decreased by 32.3% to $1.1 billion, compared to $1.7 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Dollar General operates over 20,500 stores across the US, with the majority located in 21 states in the south and east. The retailer lists around 50 stores in California but does not operate any locations in Washington state.
