The Oklahoma State Department of Health has notified the public about potential measles exposure at six locations in Green Country. Two new “probable” cases have been reported, bringing the total suspected cases in the state to four. The cases are linked to unvaccinated individuals who attended an outbreak in Texas and New Mexico.
As of Friday, those states have reported 294 cases, surpassing last year’s US measles reports. To inform visitors to these affected locations, OSDH has asked people who visited the following businesses on February 27-28 to fill out a form: Kohl’s, Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Measles is highly contagious and was declared eliminated in 2000 but has resurged due to vaccine hesitancy. The CDC recommends communities have at least a 95% vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks. In Tulsa County, only 89% of kindergarteners are current on their measles, mumps, and rubella shots, making it essential for parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up-to-date.
