Lando Norris overcame a chaotic Australian Grand Prix to claim his fifth career victory and establish a championship lead. The British driver held off charging Red Bull of Max Verstappen, crossing the line just 0.8s seconds ahead of the reigning world champion.
The race was marked by intermittent rain and high number of drivers crashing out during the contest. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri pulled clear of the pack with Norris before a trip off track ended their chance at a one-two finish.
Norris avoided a similar fate to clinch his victory, finishing ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell. Williams’ Alex Albon finished fifth, while Italian teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed fourth for Mercedes.
The race was marred by issues with McLaren’s team management, as the two drivers disagreed on how to manage their competitive relationship. Norris and Piastri had insisted they would be free to race before the event.
Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut ended in disappointment, with the seven-time world champion finishing 10th after a move by Piastri. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished eighth but was left ruing a spin that cost him a shot at a podium.
The Melbourne weather set the tone for the race, which saw six drivers retire due to accidents or mechanical issues. Norris’ victory marked a fitting start to the season and gave him a crucial lead in the championship.
