FDA Warns of Bird Flu in Raw Milk Amid Uncertainty About Risks

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has detected H5N1 bird flu in raw milk samples from several states, highlighting concerns about the health risks associated with consuming raw milk, particularly for children. While many Americans are unaware of these risks, a survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) found that 66% of respondents do not know that children face higher risks from consuming raw milk.

Raw milk can carry harmful bacteria, including Salmonella and E. coli, as well as bird flu viruses like H5N1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed over 70 cases of H5N1 bird flu in 13 states, with most infections linked to exposure to infected poultry or dairy herds.

The FDA stresses that pasteurization eliminates harmful bacteria and viruses, including H5N1, making it the best method to ensure milk safety. However, misinformation continues to influence public opinion on raw milk safety, with some Americans believing that raw milk is as safe or even safer than pasteurized milk.

A survey by APPC found that 22% of Americans believe drinking raw milk increases the risk of contracting bird flu, while 53% remain unsure. The FDA refutes claims that raw milk provides superior health benefits and poses risks, especially for children.

Public health organizations continue to emphasize the importance of choosing pasteurized milk to protect consumers, particularly vulnerable populations like children. With over 30 states permitting some form of legal sale of raw milk, public opinion on regulation remains divided, with some supporting allowing raw milk sales across state lines and others opposing it.
