Newsmax Pays $40 Million to Settle Voting Machine Defamation Lawsuit

Newsmax has agreed to pay a voting machine company $40 million to settle a defamation lawsuit over false claims made about the 2020 presidential election. Smartmatic, the voting machine company, sued Newsmax along with Fox News and One America News for spreading falsehoods that Smartmatic switched votes to favor President Joe Biden.

A settlement was reached last year between Newsmax and Smartmatic, but the amount was only recently disclosed. Smartmatic has also settled with One America News, while a lawsuit against Fox News remains ongoing. In 2023, Fox News previously settled with Dominion Voting Systems for $787 million.

Newsmax is facing another lawsuit after it dismissed reports about a mass shooter being identified as a white supremacist and shared an incorrect image of the suspect. The network’s vice president of programming, Chris Knowles, had made statements that fueled these claims, but were later found to be false.
