A deadly nightclub fire in North Macedonia has left at least 59 people dead and injured over 155, according to officials. Pope Francis has expressed his condolences for the victims and their families through a telegram.
The Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said Pope Francis assures remembrance in prayer for those who lost their lives and invokes heavenly comfort for those suffering the consequences of the fire. The Pope also wanted the Bishop of Skopje to convey his deep condolences to the families of the dead, mostly young people.
The blaze broke out at Pulse nightclub during a concert when indoor fireworks were lit. Over 1,000 young people were present when the ceiling caught on fire and rapidly spread across the discotheque. Many victims suffered burns and carbon monoxide poisoning.
North Macedonia’s government is coordinating with institutions and neighboring countries to provide additional medical support for the victims. This incident marks a tragic loss of life among North Macedonia’s young population, highlighting the need for safety measures at public gatherings.
