Hidden Fat Linked to Early Alzheimer’s Warning Signs

Excess fat in certain parts of the body may be an early warning sign for Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study found that higher visceral or “hidden belly” fat is the most important predictor of whole-brain amyloid and early tau protein accumulation, 20 years before symptoms emerge. The research, presented at the annual Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago, involved 80 middle-aged adults who were studied using brain scans, body MRIs, cholesterol panels, and other tests. The study’s lead author notes that managing Alzheimer’s risk will need to involve targeting metabolic and lipid issues related to higher body fat.
