Savage Pet, a company based in El Cajon, CA, is recalling its Chicken Cat Food due to the potential presence of H5N1, also known as bird flu. The recall affects 66 large and 74 small boxes of cat food with lot code/best by date 11152026, which were distributed to retailers in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
The recalled product may cause symptoms in cats, including fever, lethargy, low appetite, and eye and respiratory issues. Pet owners who fed their cats the recalled product should monitor their pets for these signs and contact their veterinarian immediately.
While no human infections have been identified, people handling raw pet food products can become infected if they come into contact with live virus in their eyes, nose, or mouth. To minimize risk, wash hands thoroughly while handling raw products and sanitize contact surfaces.
In February 2025, a cat in Colorado tested positive for H5N1 after feeding the recalled product. Further testing confirmed that the virus was negative, but an additional case in New York has been reported. Savage Pet is modifying its market withdrawal to a recall to ensure maximum safety.
Consumers who have purchased this lot code are urged to return the recalled product to their retailer for proper destruction and a full refund. For more information, contact Savage Pet at 619.270.0295 or [email protected].
