Rory McIlroy leads The Players Championship after a round was suspended due to lightning, remaining one shot ahead of J.J. Spaun. With play paused and scheduled to resume later, McIlroy’s chances of securing his first major title remain strong.
McIlroy started the fourth round four strokes behind but regained ground quickly with key birdies at holes 1 and 2. He then took a two-stroke lead before Spaun made up some lost ground on the ninth hole. Despite the challenging weather, McIlroy’s consistent performance has him in the lead going into play resumption.
Spaun, who was third after three rounds, struggled to recover from his previous performances and found only one birdie on Sunday so far. Tom Hoge and Akshay Bhatia share a spot just behind Spaun, each four strokes back from McIlroy.
The surprise contender in the tournament is Danny Walker, who made a strong comeback from being an alternate on the Korn Ferry Tour last year. With his 6-under 66 on Saturday, he pushed himself into contention and now finds himself tied for third place.
