D-Wave, a Palo Alto-based technology firm, has made a claim that it broke through in quantum computing. However, not all experts agree.
A team of over 60 scientists, led by Andrew King at D-Wave, published a paper in the journal Science stating they achieved “quantum advantage.” This occurs when a quantum computer solves a problem that is virtually impossible for a classical computer to handle.
Quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can process information in multiple values – 0, 1, and any value between them. Classical computers process calculations bit by bit like an assembly line. Quantum computers, on the other hand, can explore multiple solutions using carefully orchestrated arrays of qubits, exponentially increasing calculation speed and breadth.
The company’s claim has sparked debate among experts, with some expressing skepticism about its validity.
