US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called on major food companies to remove artificial dyes from their products before the end of his term. In an email sent to executives, Kennedy emphasized the need for “real and transformative change” and stated that he will take action if the industry is not willing to be proactive.
Kennedy’s ultimatum comes after a campaign against WK Kellogg Co., which led to the company removing artificial dyes from its cereals. The Health Secretary also pledged to strengthen consumer trust by getting toxins out of food, as seen in his recent post on X with food industry leaders.
Industry groups have responded positively, stating their commitment to delivering safe and affordable products to consumers. However, concerns remain that synthetic colors may be carcinogenic or trigger hyperactivity in some children.
Kennedy’s push for change also extends beyond artificial dyes, as the Health Secretary announced plans to explore changing the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) Final Rule, which allows companies to self-affirm the safety of food ingredients.
