Cuba Faces Second Consecutive Nationwide Blackout Overnight

Cuba is experiencing a second consecutive nationwide power outage, leaving millions without electricity for the second night in a row. The Associated Press reported that the blackout occurred in the evening and has caused intermittent internet and telephone services.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel assured the public that authorities are working to restore stability to the grid. However, efforts to revive power in Havana and Santiago de Cuba were unsuccessful, forcing the grid operator to start anew.

The blackouts have become a recurring issue for most Cubans outside of Havana, who often face rolling power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day. The Cuban Electricity Union has proposed creating “microsystems” to gradually restore electricity across the island.

Experts attribute recent blackouts to fuel shortages and aging infrastructure. Cuba is still recovering from an economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and tightened US sanctions, which have increased pressure on the island’s communist government.
