CWD Confirmed in Ohio Deer

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has confirmed that 24 white-tailed deer taken during the 2024-25 hunting season tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This is the first time a deer harvested by a hunter in Morrow County also tested positive. CWD, a neurological disease, is fatal to infected deer and other similar species.

The Division of Wildlife has extensively monitored and tested deer since CWD was discovered in the wild in 2020. Over 40,000 deer have been tested since 2002. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state there is no strong evidence that CWD is transmissible to humans.

Hunters can monitor the status of deer they submitted for testing on the new CWD dashboard. The dashboard provides location and harvest information for all CWD-positive wild white-tailed deer confirmed since 2020.
