Rosemary and Sage Compound May Reverse Alzheimer’s Disease

A new study has found a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, utilizing a compound found in rosemary and sage. Carnosic acid, an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, was discovered to significantly lower inflammation in the brains of mice, a key trigger for the disease. The team created a derivative of carnosic acid, diAcCA, which was shown to restore healthy nerve cell connections in the brain, promoting learning and memory.

In experiments with 5xFAD mice, bred to develop Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, researchers found that diAcCA improved cognitive skills, including memory, without causing major side effects. The compound is activated only in areas of the brain suffering from inflammation, limiting potential side effects. The study revealed that diAcCA increased synapses, reduced plaques and tangles, and decreased inflammation.

The Scripps Research Institute team developed a method to deliver carnosic acid to the bloodstream, increasing absorption rates. This breakthrough may lead to faster clinical trials and more effective treatment options for Alzheimer’s patients. With over 6.9 million Americans affected by the disease in 2024, this discovery represents a major leap forward in treating dementia.
