A Minnesota-based band Semisonic is objecting to the White House using their hit song “Closing Time” after a social media post featured a shackled deportee being patted down at an airport. The video, captioned with song lyrics about not being able to stay in a place, was deemed insensitive by the band.
“We did not authorize or condone the White House’s use of our song,” Semisonic stated. “The song is about joy and possibilities and hope, and they have missed the point entirely.” The power pop trio said no permission was sought from them before the White House shared the post on social media.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection retweeted the post with a message claiming it’s “closing time” for making America safe again. This is not the first time performers have objected to Trump using their music, including ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna, Phil Collins, Pharrell, John Fogerty, Neil Young, Eddy Grant, Panic! at the Disco, R.E.M., Guns N’ Roses, Celine Dion, BeyoncĂ©, and Adele.
