A top heart doctor has revealed that five foods often maligned for their cholesterol content are actually beneficial for heart health. Dr Evan Levine, a cardiologist at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York, says eggs have been unfairly targeted due to their yolks containing high amounts of “bad” LDL cholesterol.
However, research shows that the cholesterol in eggs has little impact on blood cholesterol levels, and factors like saturated and trans fats play a more significant role in heart disease risk. Shrimp and pork are also healthy protein alternatives to red meat, despite initial warnings about their cholesterol and saturated fat contents.
Avocados, once criticized for being high in fat, contain healthy monosaturated fat that can lower LDL cholesterol. Coffee has also been misunderstood due to caffeine’s temporary effects on blood pressure and heart rate. However, research shows no significant link between coffee consumption and long-term hypertension risk.
Dr Levine emphasizes the importance of shifting thinking around foods and recognizing the impact of ultra-processed foods. He recommends incorporating whole, unprocessed foods into your diet, such as lean protein sources like pork tenderloin and avocado, to reduce heart disease risk.
