Microsoft has released a recent Patch Tuesday update that patches 57 security vulnerabilities, including seven zero-day flaws. However, in the process of fixing these issues, the company inadvertently removed Copilot from Windows users’ PCs.
The update, which is labeled as KB5053598 for Windows 11 and KB5053606 for Windows 10, not only removes Copilot from the taskbar but also uninstalls the app itself. Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and claims it has seen no bugs in its own Copilot app but is working on a new update to fix the problem.
For those affected, reinstalling Copilot from the Microsoft Store and pinning it back to the taskbar will restore access. Alternatively, some users may prefer not to reinstall, as there are tools available that can disable or remove Copilot from Windows.
Interestingly, this incident could be seen as a silver lining for those who were tired of using Copilot in the first place. Despite its potential benefits, many have found it unnecessary or unwanted since its launch two-and-a-half years ago. Microsoft’s accidental removal may prove to be a blessing in disguise, allowing users to breathe a sigh of relief and avoid having to deal with an unwanted feature.
