Snap has introduced new features for its fifth-gen Spectacles AR glasses, aiming to improve geo-located AR experiences. Released six months ago, the developer kit-like device now allows developers to build Lenses integrating GPS, compass heading, and custom locations. This enables better outdoor AR experiences.
The update includes sample Lenses from Utopia Labs’ NavigatAR and Path Pioneer, which guide users with Snap Map Tiles and create AR walking courses. Geo-location data also helps Niantic’s Peridot Beyond AR pet simulator, connecting the AR glasses experience to mobile progression.
New features include an AR keyboard for hand-tracked text input, leaderboards, and improved hand-tracking capabilities. The company is launching a ‘Spectacles Community Challenges’ on April 1st, offering cash prizes for top new and updated Lenses judged on engagement, technical excellence, and quality.
This update signals Snap’s long-term ambition for mainstream AR adoption, competing with companies like Meta, Apple, and Google. Enhanced geo-located experiences are crucial to making AR glasses a daily necessity rather than a niche tool.
