Finnish Study Reveals Balance Between Screen Time and Physical Activity Key to Teen Mental Health

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Network Open) highlights the importance of striking a balance between screen time and physical activity in adolescent mental health. Conducted by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland, the study found that excessive screen time can have a detrimental impact on teenage well-being.

The research team followed 187 adolescents over an eight-year period, revealing that those who spent more time on digital devices were more likely to experience stress and depressive symptoms. The study suggests that prolonged screen exposure encourages a sedentary lifestyle, which is linked to poor mental health.

However, the researchers also found that physical activity can be a mitigating factor in reducing the negative effects of excessive screen time. Engaging in sports or other physical activities was associated with lower stress levels and fewer depressive symptoms.

To promote healthy habits among teenagers, experts recommend setting limits on screen time, encouraging outdoor play, and making exercise a daily family habit. Schools, policymakers, and communities can also work together to introduce more physical education programs and create spaces for kids to be active.

The study emphasizes the importance of balance in addressing mental health concerns. It is not about cutting out technology entirely, but rather finding a healthy balance between screen time and other essential habits that contribute to overall well-being.
