Microsoft has issued a warning to Chrome users about a sophisticated new attack that can steal sensitive information, including browser credentials, digital wallet data, and system details. The attack, dubbed “StilachiRAT,” uses advanced techniques to evade detection and exfiltrate sensitive data.
To prevent this type of malware from infecting your system, Microsoft advises using Edge and other web browsers that support SmartScreen, which identifies and blocks malicious websites. StilachiRAT’s capabilities include harvesting system information, targeting digital wallets, and extracting security credentials.
The attack can also scan for configuration data of cryptocurrency wallet extensions and extract saved credentials from Google Chrome, gaining access to usernames and passwords stored in the browser. Microsoft recommends switching to Edge, installing software only from official websites, using Safe Links and Safe Attachments for Office 365, and enabling network protection in Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
This warning comes as Microsoft continues its efforts to convert Chrome users to Edge, citing the integrated security defenses that come with Windows solutions. While Google may also be working behind the scenes to address the issue, Microsoft’s campaign appears to be having some impact, given Chrome’s struggles to dominate the desktop market.
