Microsoft’s Xbox 360, once nearing obsolescence, has seen a new lease on life thanks to the BadUpdate hack. This software allows modders to access a vast array of homebrew content without requiring physical console modifications. Available for free on GitHub, BadUpdate works on consoles updated to dashboard version 17559.
To use it, one needs a USB drive and either Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland or Rock Band Blitz demo. Formatting the USB drive to FAT32 format is the first step, followed by relatively straightforward instructions. Running the exploit enables “unsigned code,” allowing access to emulators, homebrew apps, and customized dashboards.
While not as persistent as previous software mods, BadUpdate eliminates the need for hardware modifications and reduces risk of damage. Users must re-run the exploit when turning off their console, but success rates are reportedly high, with YouTube tutorials available from Modern Vintage Console.
For those interested in modding old consoles, Xbox 360 offers a unique opportunity to experience homebrew content and revived gaming scenes. The revival is particularly welcome for users who have long forgotten their original Xbox 360 controllers.
