Mirra Andreeva, 17, has become the youngest champion in the BNP Paribas Open since Serena Williams in 1999, defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling match. The Russian teenager improved to 19-3 this season and collected her second Masters 1000 title of 2025.
Andreeva’s victory marked her fifth consecutive win over a top-10 opponent, including victories over both Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek. The young player praised herself for “fighting until the end” and credited her determination as key to the win.
In the match, Andreeva faced nerves that led her to smash a ball into the stands before regaining composure in the second set. She ultimately took the set 6-4 and broke Sabalenka at love in the third set to seal the victory.
Sabalenka congratulated Andreeva on an “incredible run” and praised the tournament as “great.” The Belarusian player joked about her own experiences with the Indian Wells tournament, saying she had a “love-hate relationship” with it.
