Preliminary cellphone records have revealed that Betsy Arakawa-Hackman, wife of actor Gene Hackman, did not die on February 11 as previously believed by authorities. An autopsy determined her manner of death as natural, with toxicology results still pending.
According to the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department, the last known activity of Mrs. Hackman was on February 12, when she made calls to a medical center in Santa Fe. Multiple calls were made that morning, all to the same center, and one incoming call was received from the center later that day, appearing as a missed call.
The Hackman estate recently obtained a temporary restraining order against the release of records regarding the deaths of Gene and Betsy, including any autopsy or death reports, photographs, or video footage. A hearing is set for March 31.
Detectives have already found answers to many pending questions in the case but are still waiting on specific data to tie up loose ends. The causes of death for both Gene Hackman (hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer’s) and Betsy Arakawa-Hackman (hantavirus pulmonary syndrome) were confirmed by New Mexico officials earlier.
The investigation into the deaths is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest that Mrs. Hackman did not die on February 11 as initially reported. The exact circumstances surrounding her apparent “death” remain unclear.
