Trump Admin Plans to Disrupt Social Security Benefits Process

The Trump administration plans to overhaul the Social Security claims process, according to an internal memo obtained by Popular Information. The changes aim to reduce “fraud risks” but will instead cause processing delays and make it harder for Americans to apply for and receive benefits.

Under the new policy, claimants would be required to provide proof of identity online, causing issues for those who cannot access the internet or visit a field office in person. This shift would disproportionately affect 40% of Social Security beneficiaries who rely on phone services.

The changes also anticipate an influx of 75,000-85,000 people visiting SSA offices, which already face long wait times and limited capacity. The agency has already cut 7,000 employees and closed physical locations, leaving many without access to benefits for over 100 miles.

These reforms are part of a broader effort to reduce “fraud risks,” but critics argue the real consequence is the disruption of Social Security benefits for vulnerable populations like the elderly and disabled.
