A recall has been issued for cat food products from several brands due to a possible risk of bird flu contamination. Savage Pet, Wild Coast Raw, Northwest Naturals, and Morach Raw Pet Wood have all recalled their products. The affected products include large chicken boxes with an expiration date of November 15, 2026, and small chicken boxes with an expiration date also on November 15, 2026.
Consuming these products may pose a risk to cats due to the potential presence of the H5N1 avian flu virus. In Colorado and New York, at least two cats have become sick after consuming contaminated food, although one cat in Colorado has since recovered.
Symptoms of bird flu in cats include fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, and difficulty breathing. If your cat displays any of these symptoms, it’s essential to seek veterinary attention immediately.
According to the FDA, the mortality rate for cats infected with bird flu is 67%. Humans can also become infected if they come into contact with contaminated products, so it’s crucial to handle recalled food safely. All affected products should be returned to retailers for proper destruction and a full refund.
