Michigan’s First Measles Case in 2025 Confirmed in Oakland County

A person living in Oakland County, Michigan, has been confirmed as the first case of measles for 2025. Health officials were notified at noon on March 14, 2025. The virus was likely spread through contact with an infected individual.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Koplik spots may appear inside the mouth three to five days after symptoms begin, followed by a rash that spreads across the body.

The measles vaccine is highly effective, providing 97% protection against infection if two doses are administered within a few years of exposure. One dose offers around 93% protection.

Unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus can reduce their risk by receiving the measles vaccine within 72 hours. People with weakened immune systems may not be able to receive the vaccine.

Historically, Michigan experienced significant measles outbreaks in recent years. In 2019, there were at least 46 confirmed cases, and in 2020, only 13 cases were reported.

To check vaccination status in Michigan, individuals can access their immunization records through the state’s immunization portal.
