Serbia Calls for Independent Probe into Alleged Sonic Device Attack at Peaceful Rally

Serbian authorities face mounting pressure to investigate claims that security forces used a prohibited sonic device on crowds at a peaceful anti-corruption rally last weekend. Rights groups and opposition officials have alleged that the device, banned in Serbia, was deployed at the protest on Saturday, despite President Aleksandar Vucic’s denials.

The opposition Move-Change movement has launched an online petition signed by over half a million people, calling for a UN-backed investigation into the use of the sound cannon. The petition demands a thorough examination of the device’s impact on health and human rights.

Former Serbian President Boris Tadic has also expressed support for an international probe, stating that he will seek “truth about the events” that led to public safety violations and endangered lives during the protest.

Eyewitnesses describe the alleged attack as causing panic and disorientation among protesters, with many experiencing sharp ear pain, nausea, and headaches. Security experts warn that prolonged exposure to such devices can lead to permanent hearing damage.

Vucic has denied any involvement in the alleged attack, calling it a “wicked lie” aimed at undermining his government. However, he has agreed to invite the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Russia’s Federal Security Service to investigate the claims.
